Writer Wessel te Gussinklo died last Wednesday at the age of 82, his publishing company announced. He had been ill for some time.
Te Gussinklo has been very successful in recent years. His novels The high stacker (2019) in On the way to De Hartz (2020) both won prizes. The jury of the Boekenbon Literature Prize called reading Te Gussinklo addictive in 2021. “That urge to continue reading paradoxically wins out over the unprecedented vicarious shame that the writer manages to evoke so palpably and painfully.”
Te Gussinklo only made his debut with the novel at the age of 45 The forbidden garden, for which he received the Anton Wachter Prize. He had already written a book, The expedition when he was 22, but it was never published. It still appeared in print last year.
