It’s been a long time since anything resembling an Oscar atmosphere arose in Frankfurt: Due to the corona pandemic, the Hessian Film and Cinema Prize was recently only awarded on a smaller scale. This Friday, celebrities from the Hessian film world came together again after three years for a glamorous gala in the Alte Oper.

“We are happy that we can celebrate the world of film and cinema again – and above all the many people who work there, who are creative, who are committed,” said Hesse’s Art Minister Angela Dorn (Greens) as host of the ceremony . “Well-made, artistically high-quality and carefully researched films enable a differentiated view of the world,” says Dorn.

Honorary award for Alexandra Maria Lara

One person in particular brought Hollywood glamor to Frankfurt: actress Alexandra Maria Lara. She received the Prime Minister’s Honorary Award. In the absence of Boris Rhein (CDU), Dorn read out the reason given by the head of the country, who described Alexandra Maria Lara as an outstanding actress who inspires audiences worldwide with her presence and skills.

“She embodies the diversity and quality of German film and is a role model for young talent,” said Rhein. Lara has impressed in national and international productions with her “extraordinary acting power and charisma”.

Road movie named best feature film

This year, the road movie “Vamos a la Playa” was honored in the “Best Feature Film” category. Director Bettina Blümner tells the story of three friends who travel to Cuba and are confronted with their own privileges there. The prize is endowed with 25,000 euros.

Further awards went to the documentary film “Einzelarbeiter Teil 3: Hanau” by Julian Vogel (18,000 euros in prize money), the short film “Zelle 5” by Mario Pfeifer, and the best university graduation film “Work in Transition” by Emiliano Proietti, a graduate of the university RheinMain, and in the “Best Screenplay” category to Kimia Eyzad Panah for the work “Goldfish in the Dark” (7,000 euros each).

Hessischer Rundfunk honored the best leading and supporting role

The Hessischer Rundfunk also awarded two prizes with its own jury: for the best leading and supporting role. Petra Schmidt-Schaller was awarded the best leading role this year for her performance in the ARD series “A Step to the Abyss”.

She plays “an outstandingly clever, headstrong, strong and unpredictable woman who feels betrayed by her husband,” it said. Through her “virtuoso playing” she shows the audience a modern and convincing version of the Medea myth.

The award for best supporting role went to Brigitte Hobmeier. In the new hr crime scene “Murot and the Paradise” she plays “mephistopheles” and not only captivates Inspector Murot, but also the audience, according to the jury.

Ensemble Prize also awarded for the first time

For the first time, the hr jury also honored one whole Ensemble: the actors and actresses in the film “What you can see from here”.

“We were totally impressed by the overall acting performance,” said jury member Cécile Schortmann, explaining the choice. “It’s just such an original interaction, sometimes slapstick-like, but sometimes more serious or poetic.”

Movie shot in Vogelsberg How little Ulrichstein was discovered as a film set

In autumn 2021, Ulrichstein was the location for the film “What you can see from here”. The creators particularly liked the old-fashioned charm of Hesse’s highest city. Now the cinema is starting and the mayor is hoping for more tourists.

Kassel filmmaker is best newcomer

The German-Iranian filmmaker Behrooz Karamizade had already been announced before the award ceremony as the winner of the young talent prize worth 7,500 euros. His first feature film, “Leere Netze,” released in the summer, was also nominated for best feature film.

Art and Culture Minister Angela Dorn (Greens) personally decided on the awarding of the Newcomer Prize. At the age of 45, the cameraman, editor and producer does not fit the typical image of a newcomer, the statement said.

But the award is “not necessarily about young people, but about those who are just arriving in the Hessian film and media industry” and about innovation, potential and talent.” Karamizade embodies all of this, says Dorn.

Special screenings of award-winning films

With the Hessian Cinema Prize, the state government also awarded 20 commercial and non-commercial arthouse cinemas and film art theaters with a total of 150,000 euros; The main prize winners – the Mal seh’n cinema in Frankfurt, the Filmladen Kassel and the Traumstern cinema in Lich (Gießen) – each received prize money of 20,000 euros.

Anyone who would like to see the films that were awarded on Friday evening on the big screen has the chance on the book fair weekend in several cities in Hesse: the Cinéma Frankfurt, the Bad Nauheim film stage (Wetterau), the Rex arthouse cinema in Darmstadt and the Capitol cinema in Witzenhausen (Werra-Meißner ) have special performances in the program.
