The Most Expensive Czechoslovak Coin Auctioned in Prague: A 1937 Ducat with a Documented Origin

A 1937 ducat, which numismatic experts and historians call one of the most sought-after coins, was auctioned in Prague for 840,000 euros (20.7 million crowns), including the auction markup. Martin Moc told ČTK on behalf of the Macho & Chlapovič auction house, which organized the auction. According to him, this is the record price for which a Czechoslovak coin has ever been auctioned. The starting price was 650,000 euros (CZK 16 million).

The double ducat has a documented origin, it comes from the collection of Karel Hackenschmied, a high-ranking employee of the Czechoslovak Ministry of Finance. “In the archive records of the Kremnica Mint, we found accurate information about his order. This makes it even more attractive from the point of view of investors and collectors,” said Elizej Macho, co-founder of the auction house, before the auction.

According to the auction house, it is the rarest vintage of St. Wenceslas two ducats. Four or eight pieces were minted. According to her, the auctioned piece is the most beautiful known piece with mint luster.

Karel Hackenschmied was an important employee of the Austro-Hungarian Bank, according to the auction house, his collection was extraordinary in that it was complete and contained a large number of rare coins, especially from the time of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. After 1918, Hackenschmied worked at the Czechoslovak Ministry of Finance.

Today, collectors could choose from more than 500 items during the hall auction. From Monday 23rd to Wednesday 26th October, another almost 1900 items will follow, which interested parties will be able to acquire in the internet auction.
