The San Matero neighborhood library opens its doors this Friday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m., a real community pride that will serve to continue spreading culture throughout Narón. The Councilor for Libraries, Olga Ameneiro, has presented the project together with the secretary of the Parish Neighborhood Group, Pepe Blanco, and Manuel Piñón, partner of the entity and promoter of the initiative.
Piñón works at a waste management company and began two decades ago to rescue thousands of publications, including the 4,000 that are now cataloged in the new library. “Fundamentally they are novels, but there are also books of poetry, theater, biographies, children’s books…” he explained, remembering that the first book he saved from recycling was a first edition of the Casa da Troia published in Buenos Aires.
“It caught my attention and I saw that it was no coincidence that books of great value appeared among the rubble and, although some were quite deteriorated, with the help and sensitivity of the company we were able to recover them in an area where we cleaned and stored them”, he says. Between donations to other entities, there came a moment in which Piñón contacted the one in San Mateo, from where they arranged the premises and the personnel necessary to bring the project to fruition.
“The main objective is to encourage reading, so books will be left on loan as another service from the San Mateo Neighborhood Association, which will be open to the public at a specific time, attended by a person and to which those who desire”, explains the promoter, who has been congratulated by Ameneiro for the “work carried out to recover so many publications that will now be made available to the neighborhood”.
