Sharon den Adel has been responsible for the songs of Within Temptation together with her husband Robert Westerholt for many years. They just never do the writing in the same room. That would not benefit their relationship.
Den Adel and Westerholt work separately with producer Daniel Gibson. He helps them turn ideas into songs. “Daniel is mainly there to ensure that we do not completely destroy each other,” Den Adel tells NU.nl with a laugh.
“Writing is such a fragile process. With one wrong word you completely lose the atmosphere. Because you have known each other for so long, you say unfiltered that you don’t like something. Much too direct or hostile. Talking to a producer in between you different.”
In this way, the couple gives each other space to develop their own ideas. At home at the kitchen table they do not discuss the direction of their music. “But then we talk about what we like about each other’s ideas.”
But how do you resolve it together if you disagree about the lyrics or sound of a particular song? “Above all, you have to be open about it. But sometimes you have such a love for a particular song and you have a very clear idea of what it should be. We understand that from each other. Then we also let you play along to see who came up with the original idea of had the number. He can say the most about it.”
‘On stage we are two captains on a ship’
Westerholt also played live in the band until 2011, but stopped to care for the couple’s then young children. A return to the stage now that the children are a bit older is not in line with expectations, Den Adel thinks. “He liked the performance, but it was not his favorite part. Together on stage we are also two captains on a ship.”
“You just shouldn’t be in a band with your partner, actually. We were also separated as a couple for a while. That was because we were in each other’s aura for 24 hours. Everything you experience happens together. Then you have each other at a at a certain point there is nothing left to say. We need that distance every now and then to maintain our relationship.”
The fans don’t have to do without Westerholt’s guitar work. “He makes a surprise appearance here and there and we all think that’s really cool.”
