In terms of sport, Lionel Messi finds himself in an unusual situation. With Inter Miami he missed the playoffs of the North American Major League Soccer (MLS) and has to be content with a spectator role in the fight for the title.
Financially, however, the Argentine is the undisputed number one in the league. As the MLS published, the superstar receives $20,466,667 (approx. 19.3 million euros) per year from his club. With Lorenzo Insigne, only one other MLS star receives more than ten million dollars per year. The Italian, who works for Toronto FC, earns $15,400,000 (approx. €14.56 million) – over five million less than Messi.
The salary podium is completed by former Bayern star Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss is under contract with Chicago Fire, where Bastian Schweinsteiger also played. Shaqiri’s work in Windy City is paid 7,350,000 dollars (approx. 6.95 million euros) per year.
In addition to the basic salary, the players’ annual salary is made up of additional bonus payments.
Messi moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami in July of this year. He made his first appearance for David Beckham’s club on August 27th against New York. He scored his first goal in the 2-0 win. In total he made five appearances, but was not able to score another goal. He also missed five games due to muscle injuries.
