As the war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February last year, has exceeded 600 days, reports have emerged that the struggling Ukrainian army appears to have advanced into Russian-occupied territory.
On the 20th (local time), the BBC, citing an announcement from the American Institute of War Studies (ISW), reported that Ukrainian troops crossed the Dnipro River from southern Kherson Oblast and advanced up to 4 km into eastern Russian-occupied territory.
ISW said through a Russian source, “A unit estimated to be the size of two companies of the Ukrainian Navy infantry brigade crossed the Dnipro River on the 17th and 18th of this month and launched an attack on the eastern bank,” and “Location information released on October 18th. “In the video, it appears that Ukrainian forces have crossed north of Pishanivka and advanced toward Poima,” it said.
Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine, has been occupied by Ukrainian troops to the west and Russian troops to the east, centered around the Dnipro River, since the war. Pishanivka and Poima, where ISW announced that the Ukrainian military had advanced, are both villages on the east side of the Dnipro River and belong to Russian occupation.
The BBC analyzed that the Ukrainian army had previously made several small-scale attacks across the Dnipro River, but this advance appeared to be an attempt to expand the occupied area on a larger scale than before.
Ukraine has been launching a counteroffensive in the south since June in an attempt to cut off Russia’s land route to the Crimea peninsula. The BBC reported that Ukraine is aiming to further complicate Russia’s supply lines by seizing the Azov Sea coast.
Russia issued a statement on the 18th (local time) regarding Ukraine’s advance, saying, “We have suppressed the activities of four Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups in Poima and nearby villages.” President Putin visited China that day and said, “(The war) has no results yet. (Ukraine) has losses,” he said.
