Amazon Introduces New Humanoid Robot, Digit, to Its Warehouses – Designed to Work Alongside Employees

Amazon has introduced a new humanoid biped robot called Digit to its warehouses. Developed by Agility Robotics, Digit is designed to work alongside workers, not replace them. With its turquoise torso and friendly eyes, Digit is different from other warehouse robots Amazon has used before.

Amazon has steadily increased its fleet of robots over the years. In 2017, the company had 45,000 robots in 2021 fulfillment centers. In June 2022, Amazon unveiled a fleet of four robots named after characters from “Sesame Street” and “The Muppets.” The following year, Amazon introduced Proteus, a fully autonomous warehouse robot that works alongside employees. XNUMX In November 2015, Sparrow, a robot arm with a suction cup arm, was introduced to handle individual items in the warehouse.

Unlike other Amazon warehouse robots, Digit is specifically designed to work in spaces designed for humans. It can move, grasp and manipulate objects in new ways, making it useful for tasks such as recycling.

Amazon has often emphasized that its robots are designed to improve employee safety and experience. The company believes that technology should make the work experience safer, easier and less repetitive for employees, giving them more time and opportunities to serve customers. However, some workers have expressed concern that the increased use of robots could lead to a decline in the human workforce.

There have also been questions about whether robots actually improve worker safety. In the past, Amazon’s robotic warehouses have been criticized for higher injury rates compared to warehouses without robots. Amazon has disputed these claims, saying the data has been misinterpreted.

While the introduction of Digit may raise concerns among employees, Amazon insists it is designed to work with employees, not replace them. Only time will tell how robots will continue to impact the workforce and improve the efficiency of Amazon’s warehouses.
