Low Percentage of Drivers Have Minimum Third-Party Damage Insurance in the City

Although the vehicle fleet in the city increased to a historic level, only 30 percent have a minimum of third-party damage insurance, according to data from the Mexican Association of Insurance and Bond Agents (Amasfac).

With the decree that has regularized thousands of vehicles this year, the sale of car insurance increased by 20 percent, however, the number is still low, since 70 percent of drivers do not have a policy and evade that civil liability. .

“It has increased by 20 percent and basically it has been due to the vehicles that entered with the decree, plus the natural rate year after year,” said Rafael Gómez Lima, local member of Amasfac.

The current vehicle registry in Juárez is 685 thousand vehicles, according to the report released yesterday by Rogelio Loya Luna, Revenue Collector.

The official also pointed out that the figure has been purged from the units that are no longer in use, due to those who have taken advantage of the precautionary discharge program for 500 pesos.

Given this, Amasfac insists that having third-party damage insurance should be a condition when Revenue Collection carries out the vehicle revalidation.

“This is a problem because, despite the fact that mandatory coverage is very cheap, they are not acquired and it is not required as it should be when carrying out revalidation or replacing,” mentioned Gómez Lima.

He pointed out that although civil liability insurance is published in the law, it is not enforced when the State grants permission for a vehicle to circulate.

“The State should say: there are no plates if you do not present third-party damage insurance, because if you damage a person and they do not have insurance, out of every 10 vehicles, three have insurance; It is highly probable that the person who hits you will not have insurance and if you are injured they will send you to the General Hospital, and who does the General Hospital cost? To all of us who live in Juárez,” he said.

He considered that there is no political will to make it mandatory, since it is only required by the Road Safety Coordination at the time an accident occurs.

The average cost of third-party damage insurance in the market is 2,200 pesos, that is, six pesos per day. A quarter of what a liter of gasoline costs. And with that amount a driver avoids spending up to 3 million pesos at the time of a crash, he said.

He added that Amasfac seeks to raise awareness about the importance of being responsible when driving a car, for which it offers talks in schools and companies.
