Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Orionid meteor shower Just counting the days to reach the peak which can also be enjoyed at Indonesia. Following are the detailed schedule.
The peak occurred when the Earth ‘broke through’ the dust and debris left by Halley’s comet in the inner solar system.
The American Meteor Society revealed that the Orionid meteor shower is actually active from September 26 to November 22. However, the best time to watch it is only one night.
For US time, quoted from LiveScience, the peak occurred Saturday (21/10) at 01.00 EDT. At this peak moment, it is estimated that there are around 23 ‘shooting stars’ per hour at a speed of 66 kilometers per second or around 238 thousand km/hour.
Meanwhile, the peak of the meteor shower in Indonesia was a day later.
Bosscha Observatory, through its Instagram account, revealed that the peak of the Orionid meteor shower occurred on October 22 at 22.14 WIB until dawn.
This meteor shower can be seen in the direction of the Orion constellation.
Observation location
NASA described the Orionids as “one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year.”
This meteor shower can appear anywhere in the sky. However, they appear to originate near Betelgeuse, a famous red giant star in the constellation Orion.
Shooting stars themselves occur when meteors rub against air particles and create heat which evaporates the meteor to create a bright line of light in the sky.
When the peak of this meteor shower occurs, the Moon is approaching its first quarter phase. The sky will be darkest after midnight after the Moon sets.
This is considered ideal because the Orionids are best visible in the hours after midnight, according to NASA. A better observation location is in a place that has dark skies and minimal light pollution.
The Orionids are one of two annual meteor showers caused by Halley’s comet, which were last visible in the inner solar system in 1986.
Another meteor shower is the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which peaks every year in early May.
Apart from Neptune, Halley’s comet orbits the Sun approximately once every 76 years, making it the only naked-eye comet that can theoretically be seen twice in a human lifetime.
Next, the comet will circle the Sun and pass close to Earth in 2061.
