France’s Great West Faces Water Crisis as Drought Persists and Rivers Run Dry

The rain of the last few hours has not changed the situation much for the moment. France and, more particularly, the Great West, have been experiencing a rainfall deficit for several months. This lack of water, aggravated by the exceptional heat at the beginning of October, causes an exceptionally low flow for the Loire. The low flow support capacities of the Naussac (Allier) and Villerest (Loire) dams also continue to be reduced. All the departments crossed by the largest river in France are already affected by measures restricting the use of water in order to protect drinking water resources.

The most populated department of them, Loire-Atlantique, has just decided to go to “heightened alert”, indicates the prefecture. “This situation leads to restrictions on car wash centers, the watering of sports fields and green spaces, the filling and leveling of swimming pools but also on agricultural levies,” specifies the Loire-Atlantique prefecture.

The low water situation in rivers “still remains complicated” for almost all of the surface watersheds in this department. The watersheds of the Loire Côtiers Bretons, Côtiers Bretons replenished, Logne Boulogne Ognon, and the Sanguèze, are even classified in crisis.
