The story of an elderly couple who survived after being captured by Hamas members during a surprise attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas has become known.
According to foreign media reports such as the Associated Press on the 19th, Rachel Edri (65), an Israeli woman who was captured with her husband by Hamas members at the time, was able to survive by winning their favor by serving them tea and cookies.
Edri, who lives in the city of Ofakim in southern Israel, was at home with her husband on the 7th, the day of the incident, when she was captured and taken hostage by five armed Hamas members who stormed into the house.
There were gunshots outside the house, but Edri did not panic and served canned pineapple, tea, and Moroccan cookies to the Hamas members. She even sang to them in Arabic.
The Edri couple had a friendly time with Hamas members for a while.
“After they drank and ate, they became much calmer,” said Edri. “As we talked, at some point I even forgot that they were terrorists.”
One Hamas member reportedly told Edri, “You remind me of my mother.”
Edri responded, “I will help you,” calming the Hamas fighters’ guard.
The Edri couple were rescued by the Israeli military about 17 hours after being taken hostage by Hamas members. In this process, all Hamas members were killed.
Edri was invited and met with US President Joe Biden, who visited Israel on the 18th (local time).
Edrey said, “I am not a hero,” adding, “Soldiers and police officers are the real heroes. “It is thanks to them that I was saved,” he said.
