Firmness and Kindness: Tailor-made Education in an Ecological School

Firmness and kindness are combined in the adapted educational establishment which adjoins the Rambaud college. The educational team does tailor-made work to guide the students, and cultivates, during this school year, the ecological fiber.

REPORTAGE. Thierry Henry closes the door to his office, for a kind and firm face-to-face with a 4th grade teenager who is causing difficulties in his class. The head of the establishment reminds him of the rules, confronts him with his responsibilities and finally puts him in the hands of his grandfather. The very young man is not done yet: he will have to write, during the weekend, a text on what he expects from college, from his schooling and what the establishment brings him. Faced with its 140 students, who have often experienced suffering in terms of learning, Eréa (1) does tailor-made work, adapts to the path of each child, and monitors their progress. “We know each of the students,” confirms Thierry Henry. “They follow the same cycle as in college and find themselves facing specialized teachers, in small groups, eight students in the workshop, sixteen students in class. The learning methods are adapted , hence the name of the establishment. We go at the student’s pace, trying to ensure that he regains his self-confidence.”

Restore the desire to go to school

The SVT course thus takes a detour through the vegetable garden over which a passionate teacher watches over (2). In the different workshops, students discover the facets of many professions. “On the one hand, we are strengthening mastery of the fundamentals,” continues Thierry Henry. “On the other hand, we are working on the professional project. The students spend from 6 hours (for 4th grade) to 12 hours (for 3rd grade) in the workshop. Overall, we strive to make them want to go to school again.”

In this system, the boarding school also plays an important role, which the teaching team intends to amplify, within the framework of the Nefle project (3). “The slam workshop is being repeated this year, with 3rd grade students,” continues Fatiha Sobierajewicz, delegated director for professional and technological training. “But we have decided to direct many actions towards the boarding school, to make it a place of more welcoming life, with a dynamic nature of activities. For their part, the students actively participate in improving their living environment: the CAP painting students are working to beautify the rooms, the future masons have created a large flower bed at the foot of the facade of the building administrative, the benches scattered throughout the green spaces were manufactured in-house, like the kiosk located near the educational restaurant. A greenhouse project will also see the light of day next to the vegetable garden. “This approach strengthens the feeling of belonging and facilitates respect for the living environment,” notes Fatiha Sobierajewicz.

Finally, for the second year, Eréa cultivates ecological fiber. “An approach that we launched last year, underlines the delegated director for professional and technological training. We have grouped together initiatives that existed for some, giving them meaning.” Eréa has thus created a temporary thrift store, where clothes sorted and mended by the students are sold. Sustainable development awareness workshops are set up. The menu commission, which brings together adults and students, has been relaunched, with the mission of “improving the quality of food and local eating in particular”. Erea, for this project, relies on Bio Ariège Garonne, born from the merger between Civam Bio and Erable 31, and which strives to structure short and organic production circuits. And the list of actions is still long: “The students work on composting, waste sorting, we try to improve, on biodiversity,” explains Fatiha Sobierajewicz.

(1) Regional adapted education establishment. There are only 78 in France, compared to more than 10,000 middle and high schools. (2) La Dépêche will devote an upcoming report to this extraordinary garden. (3) “Our school, let’s do it together” system, which supports educational initiatives that emerge from schools and their teams.
