On October 20 and 21, 2023, the National Library of Latvia will host another foreign policy and security forum “Riga Conference 2023”, which annually gathers high-level politicians and recognized experts to discuss regional and international current events.
The opening speech of the event will be delivered by the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs. On the other hand, the discussions of the Riga conference will be introduced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņas and European Union Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton (Thierry Breton) conversation about current European and transatlantic security challenges.
The former President of Latvia Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga (1999–2007), Ministers of Defense of Latvia and Estonia, as well as other officials and international relations experts.
This year’s forum will discuss the need for a comprehensive strategy to support Ukraine, international legal issues related to Russian aggression in Ukraine, as well as the impact of Russian aggression on the European economy. NATO’s progress towards the Washington summit will also be discussed, including the strengthening of security in the Baltic Sea region, as well as the existing challenges for the European military industry. The conference will also provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the vision of experts on the influence of India and the Pacific region on geopolitical processes. A separate discussion will be on the role of women in maintaining peace and security, as well as on women in wartime.

Since 2006, the Riga Conference has been organized by the Latvian Transatlantic Organization (LATO) with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense in cooperation with the NATO Public Diplomacy Department, the European Commission Representation in Latvia and the Konrads Adenauer Foundation. The conference is supported by a number of embassies accredited in Latvia, as well as the companies “Latvenergo”, “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons”, “Audi Latvija” and “BALTA”.
