Legia Warszawa started the FIBA Europe Cup competition in great style. On Wednesday evening in the Bemowo hall, Legia defeated the Finnish Kataja Basket 85:62. PGE Spółnia Stargard also won a priceless away victory. Defending champion Anwil Włocławek was defeated, but he had to face the strongest rival.
On Tuesday, the Polish champion King Wilki Szczecin had a very successful inauguration in the Basketball Champions League (the third “league” of Europe), beating Italian Dinamo Sassari 85:77 at home. Śląsk Wrocław is doing worse in the Eurocup (Europe’s 2nd “league”), having suffered three defeats in three matches, while Legia Warszawa, PGE Sbójnia Stargard and Anwil Włocławek started the competition in the FIBA Europe Cup (Europe’s 4th league) on Wednesday.

Legia Warszawa triumphs in the FIBA Europe Cup. Over 20 points ahead
Legia Warszawa was a bit lucky in the draw of the FIBA Europe Cup group stage, because it was spared teams from strong European leagues. Wojciech Kamiński’s team will face the Finnish Kataja Basket, the Slovak Patrioti Levice and the Romanian CSM CSU Oradea.
First, Legia played in the Bemowo hall against a team from Finland and had no problem with a certain victory 85:62. It was a match with absolutely no history, in which the Warsaw team was leading from start to finish – it started with a 17:8 lead and in the following minutes only increased its advantage, up to a maximum of 27 points (78:51 in the fourth quarter).
As many as five basketball players scored over 10 points for Legia – Aric Holman (16), Grzegorz Kulka (13), Josip Sobin, Marcel Ponitka (12 each) and Michał Kolenda (11). The Finns’ most effective player was Amanze Egekeze, who scored 12 points. Legia will play away against Patrioti Levice next week (October 25, 7:00 p.m.)
A priceless win for Spółnia in the Netherlands. The result was decided until the last seconds
PGE Spółnia Stargard also made a winning debut in this year’s competition. Arguster Daniels scored 29 points, and the Polish team won away against the Dutch Heroes Den Bosch 92:89.
It was a very even match. For a long time, neither team was able to get a few points ahead of their rivals. It was only at the turn of the third and fourth quarter that Spółnia managed to build a 13-point advantage (72:85), but even such a difference in the middle of the last part of the game was not the end of the duel.
The hosts began to desperately chase the Poles. The 9-0 series allowed them to reduce the loss to four points (81:85) and ensure great emotions until the very end. However, Spółnia was able to maintain a slight advantage throughout. This could have changed in the last action of the match, but Roberts Stumbris missed a three-pointer three seconds before the end to tie the score.
In addition to Daniels’ 29 points, Aleksandar Langović scored 18 for Sjejnia, and Benjamin Simons and Stephen Brown scored 10 each. Derrick Fenner scored 24 points for the hosts, Roberts Stumbris 19, and Thomas van der Mars 15.
Next week, Spółnia will play at home against the German Niners Chemnitz. The Kosovo club KB Peja also competes in group H.
Anwil’s defeat at the inauguration. The Spanish turned out to be too strong
The current defending champion of the FIBA Europe Cup, Anwil Włocławek, started the game unsuccessfully. The team from Włocławek slightly lost at home to the Spanish Bilbao Basket 79:83.
The result of this match was decided by the terrible ending of the hosts, who were leading 79:74 2.5 minutes before the end and from that moment on they did not score a single point, while the rivals scored nine points, and the key three-pointer for Bilbao at 79:81 was scored four seconds before mermaid Adam Smith.
In this match, Anwil played a very good first half, which it won 49:38, and in the middle of the third quarter it was leading 56:44, but from that moment on, the Spaniards started an effective pursuit, which turned out to be successful. The most points for Anwil in this match were scored by Jakub Garbacz (16), as well as Amir Bell and Luke Petrasek (11 each). The most effective scorer for the guests was the 37-year-old American Alex Renfroe (23 points), and the Englishman Sacha Killeya-Jones scored slightly less.
The Scottish Caledonia Gladiators and the Romanian CSU Sibiu also compete in Group B of the FIBA Europe Cup. Anwil will play this first team away next week (25/10, 20:00)
