Seagate has introduced 24GB Exos X24 hard drives designed for hyperscalers and data centers. If desired, these HDDs can also be used in home PCs, since they will be produced not only with a SAS interface (for data centers), but also with the usual SATA III (6 Gbit/s).

Seagate Exos X24 hard drives use the traditional magnetic recording (CMR) method. The new items are filled with helium and equipped with ten plates with a capacity of 2.4 TB each. The manufacturer reports that for certain cloud platforms it continues to supply HDD Exos X24 models with a capacity of up to 28 TB, which use SMR tiled recording technology. It provides higher data storage density, but at the same time has a much lower rewrite speed.
The new Seagate Exos X24 24 TB hard drives are made in a standard 3.5-inch form factor, are equipped with 512 MB of cache memory and operate at 7,200 rpm, providing sustained data transfer speeds of up to 285 MB/s. At the same time, new products have a long service life. The manufacturer claims a mean time between failures of 2.5 million hours. In standby mode, their power consumption is 6.3 W, in read and write modes they consume 8.9 and 7.1 W, respectively.
The new products support Seagate Secure encryption features, providing self-encrypting disk (SED), SED-FIPS and instant secure erase (ISE). The Exos X24 HDD comes with a five-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Seagate has already begun shipping prototype 24 TB Exos X24 hard drives to select customers. Mass deliveries of these HDDs will begin in December.
