Have you ever seen a ‘red’ or ‘yellow’ light displayed at the turnstile when riding the subway?
Depending on the type of ticket, the electronic sound you hear at the ticket gate also varies.
These are devices that distinguish between regular tickets and free-ride tickets, but they seem to need improvement as there is a risk of human rights violations.
This is reporter Jeong Hyeon-woo’s report.

When a passenger holding a cane passes through the subway station turnstile, a ‘yellow’ light comes on at the bottom.
As another passenger enters, this time a ‘red’ light is displayed.
These are all passengers who have used a ‘preferential ticket’ that allows them to ride for free. Yellow indicates ‘disabled’ and red indicates ‘elderly’ preferential ticket users.
“When you go through the turnstile using a regular ticket, no color appears on the LED.
“There is a clear difference from the preferential treatment used by the disabled and the elderly.”
There is also a difference in the ‘notification sound’ when the ticket gate reader recognizes the preferential ticket.
In normal riding, the ‘beep’ sound is heard only once.
If you use a preferential ticket for the disabled or the elderly, it will beep twice.
This applies to all Seoul subway lines from Line 1 to Line 8.
In addition, since last June, at 10 stations including Seoul Station, which has a lot of passengers, a separate voice guidance has been provided for preferential tickets for senior citizens as a pilot project.
“take care of yourself.”
Not only will your personal information be exposed against your will, but the uncomfortable gaze that you are riding for free is also a burden.
The Seoul Transportation Corporation explains that this is a desperate measure to crack down on the theft of preferential tickets, that is, illegal free riding.
However, the number of cases of illegal riding has increased by 30% compared to five years ago and is not decreasing.
This is why there is criticism as to whether there is a real preventive effect.
Amid criticism that it is a human rights violation and administratively convenient system, an alternative appears to be needed.
