New life
Due to the haze in her thoughts, Eveline was unable to continue her career as an interim consultant manager. “When my old life fell away, I wondered: what can I do now? That was the moment I decided to get into home care. It was a relief. When I came to people’s homes they were so happy that I was there. As an interim employee, no one was happy when I joined an organization, but here I was. I could do so much for the elderly. I did it for three years. It was very healing to do.”

Meanwhile, Eveline starts researching menopause online, but she soon notices that there is little reliable information available. “The fact that there is so little useful information available does not do justice to the women going through this phase.” It is the reason for Eveline to start a community for women in menopause, called Vuurvrouw. “I wanted to create a place where women can share experiences and find reliable information about menopause, because that was exactly what I needed.”
Get well soon
Ultimately, after five to six years, Eveline finds relief thanks to hormone therapy and discovers a hormone gel that significantly reduces her complaints. She shares, “It took a while, but after I found a great gynecologist, I was finally able to start treatment. After the first week of applying the cream, while I was standing in the kitchen, I suddenly felt the light come on in my head again. As if the fog in my head disappeared. I was myself again. It has done me so much good.”
Eveline is now approaching the end of her transition period and she looks back on it positively, despite the countless complaints she has had to endure. “It was a beautiful journey. Despite everything, I was still able to maintain control over my own life. It helped me become more receptive. I feel more complete now.”
After the transition
Eveline mentions that she found the loss of her beauty difficult, with weight gain and a greater sense of insecurity. But now, after getting through this phase, she feels better about it. “Now I can really enjoy it. Almost 60 years and no longer in the spotlight. I don’t have to put in any extra effort anymore. It is wonderful to go to the supermarket anonymously in my jogging suit and experience that I have taken a different position in society. That anonymity feels like Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. And that is wonderful.”
According to Eveline, it is crucial not to resist the changes in your body. She emphasizes: “If you do, you make the whole experience much harder. During menopause, your body pulls the emergency brake and you can feel all kinds of changes. Don’t just focus on your complaints, but on the things that are going well.”
Eveline went in search of her own essence, for memories of her childhood. She rediscovered her love for singing and decided to take singing lessons, which gave her a big dose of positive energy. She rediscovered herself and would like to share this message with others going through the same experience. Her advice is: “Don’t focus exclusively on what doesn’t work, but take the time for what does work. That way you can get back on track.”
