Distribution of General Practitioners and Pediatricians in Hamburg: Findings and Challenges

As of: October 18, 2023 4:53 p.m

The Hamburg Left Party asked the Senate which district of Hamburg has how many family doctors and pediatricians. The current figures are now available.

One of Hamburg’s smaller districts has the most family doctors: Almost 10,000 people live in Hoheluft-Ost – and there were more than 60 family doctors registered there at the beginning of the year. However, many of them work part-time. Rahlstedt comes in second place. Hamburg’s largest district has around 96,000 residents who are cared for by 54 family doctors. Closely followed by Billstedt and Hamburg-Altstadt. The worst performers include very small districts like Francop in the south of Hamburg, where there are no family doctor practices.

Few pediatrician practices in the east of Hamburg

Rahlstedt is also a stronghold for pediatricians. 16 practice there, followed by the districts of Harburg and Eimsbüttel. There are few pediatric practices in the east of Hamburg – this has already been brought to the attention of politicians. Overall, there are few changes compared to the previous year when it comes to the distribution of general practitioners and pediatricians’ practices in Hamburg.

The map shows how many general practitioners or pediatricians practice in the Hamburg districts with a view to the relevant population. In Hamburg there is on average less than one pediatrician per 1,000 minors. The same applies to family doctors. Of these, too, there is less than one per 1,000 adult Hamburg residents.

High density of doctors in central parts of the city

In both cases it can be seen that central districts such as the old town or Harburg have a high density of doctors. However, in over half of the districts there is not a single doctor for pediatricians and adolescents, so additional routes are often necessary. When it comes to family doctors, most parts of the city have at least one, although there are some larger parts of the city without a family doctor at all.
