“I don’t like it when there are too many comparisons. I like it when they stand for themselves,” said Federer in the “ATP Tennis Radio Podcast”.
From the Swiss’s point of view, Alcaraz, like his compatriot Nadal, has “the power on the forehand side”. He sees similarities in technology to himself. “Of course you see the drop shot, you see that he uses the slice, he can play from behind like Rafa can,” explained Federer.
The 20-year-old also has similarly good defensive skills as Djokovic. “But Novak is of course at an elite level, because when you do that for so many years, you are basically alone,” said the 20-time Grand Slam winner, who ended his career in 2022.
Federer now urged restraint when praising the young Spaniard.
Roger Federer dampens expectations at Alcaraz
“I think Carlos has done as well as he could so far,” said the Swiss. However, he will still “lose from time to time, like in Shanghai, but he’s doing fantastically well. He’s playing great and has an incredible future ahead of him.”
Federer concluded: “Alcaraz is great. He is still young and everything he has achieved is fantastic. And not just on clay or hard court. Now he has also won the Wimbledon final against Novak. That is not Child’s play.” These achievements are “very impressive”.
