Thionville. The investment, which amounts to around 2 million euros, demonstrates the major work underway in Thionville. A venerable building dating from the 17th century, the town hall has transformed, over the years, into a veritable energy sieve. Its renovation has been made a priority by the municipality.

The building, located at the entrance to the town, is currently in a fitting room. Out of sight behind a wall of scaffolding, she no longer displays her period dress. The former convent of the Poor Clares which houses the town hall of Thionville, in Moselle, has been under construction since last February. Perfect timing.
This renovation project takes on its full meaning in the name of ecological transition. This uncertain era of energy prices also justifies tackling this monument erected in the 17th century. It was time, more than time even, to place this heritage, partially classified as Historic Monuments, in its… time.
301 windows replaced
The mayor of Thionville, Pierre Cuny, engaged in a territorial marketing policy, easily recognizes this: “his” town hall, made up of five buildings, has transformed over its long history into a veritable “energy sieve”. The building, which is particularly energy-intensive, largely contributed to the spectacular additional cost of energy expenditure recorded by the municipality in 2022. It then reached the dizzying sum of €1.5 million…
Reducing this bill in the long term will firstly involve completely replacing the joinery. In the case of the Thionville town hall, the operation is not trivial. It concerns 301 windows: “169 will be changed this year, the rest will be done in 2024”, predicts the town hall. One pitfall, however: the character of the place complicates the task.
From single to triple glazing
The technical constraints relate to the “historical” dimension of the site. As an illustration, the Bâtiments de France have drawn up a voluminous study file, of almost 1000 pages, detailing each window… Preserving the authenticity of the framing of these period pieces figures prominently in the notebook of the project manager’s charges. As for the new glass surfaces, they will go from single to triple glazing. A leap in time which resonates as a guarantee of significantly reducing energy loss.
This project also includes the renovation of the facades of the four main buildings as well as the renovation of the square. This resurrection, scheduled to be completed in mid-2024, is backed by a substantial budget, of around €2 million. This strong desire to isolate this heritage and propel it into a more virtuous era is supported by the State, which grants €608,000 in subsidies.
