Legendary Austrian Children’s Series That Deserve a Comeback

The popular children’s series “Once upon a time…” is celebrating its comeback. Austria has also produced productions that absolutely need a new edition.

Not only famous fairy tales begin with “Once upon a time”. A popular animated series from France that many people grew up with in the 80s and 90s also bears the name. “Once upon a time…”, originally “Il était une fois…” was a knowledge transfer series in which a bearded and wise man named Maestro introduced young and old viewers to the history of man, space or the human body. Now the cult series is returning.

Helene Barille, the widow of creator Albert Barille, announced a new edition with 78 episodes of seven minutes each. The eighth season of the classic will be about the curious secrets of everyday objects. The first episodes in the French original should be shown on television in 2024 and of course with Maestro at the start. Nostalgic adults from all over the world and children who are coming into contact with the series for the first time should be happy.

This certainly also applies to many Austrians. And Austria not only has potential as a location for world productions such as Star Wars or the US series The Office. The country has also produced some legendary children’s series in the cult category that viewers and fans of the past long for.

I Give Often

Almost 4,000 broadcast episodes and a lifespan of more than 22 years make “Am Dam Des” one of the most enduring and at the same time legendary children’s programs in Austria. Broadcast every day from Monday to Friday, the program was intended to provide something of a substitute for children who did not attend kindergarten through crafts, songs and stories.

gaming galaxy

The Game Galaxy was a game show developed by Thomas Brezina in which two children’s teams, each consisting of two players, raced through the galaxy in virtual spaceships and competed against each other in various games and puzzles. The format ran on private German channels such as Super RTL and Nick until the late 2000s.

Research Express

Brezina also came up with the idea for the Research Express. From 2004 to 2008, ORF’s Confetti TiVi introduced children and young people to science and technology every week through experiments and building instructions. The show was moderated by Brezina herself and Kati Bellowitsch.

Dragon Treasure

In the quiz show Drachenschatz, none other than Brezina also had a hand in it. In the quiz show, the participating children had to answer questions in order to reach the dragon treasure via parkour. The malevolent wizard Merlox von Mieselsupp tried to stop them.

Kiddy Contest

Even before Germany is looking for the superstar (DSDS) or other music casting shows in Austria and Germany were intended to cause a sensation, the Kiddy Contest has been inviting children onto the big stage since 1995. Every year, ten young singing talents from Germany, Austria and Switzerland interpret a well-known pop song. The 2019 anniversary edition of the show’s 25th anniversary was also the last edition.

Circus about confetti

The namesake and mascot of the children’s program Confetti TiVi was the green-haired creature Confetti. In the series Circus about Confetti, Mimi the goose, Bobo the dog and Schu Schu the rabbit also appeared in front of the camera as puppets.

Miniverse

For many viewers, the Universum program is still a must-see on ORF on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But for a long time there was also something like a mini version of the documentary series. In Miniversum, children learned everything about the world of animals from presenter Christina Karnicnik.

Not all of the good productions from the past have been discontinued. Fortunately, there are still series like Tom Turbo. However, you would first have to explain some other Austrian cult series to the rest of the world.
