Off to the night of the newsstands: tonight those who sell newspapers and magazines will light up their kiosk to reiterate the history and importance of a commercial sector that has accompanied the daily life of Italians for decades. A profession that, however, risks disappearing: paper is trying to repel the attacks of the network, but the fight is very tough.
Antonio Durzu, the historic newsstand on Via Roma in Cagliari, due to force majeure, no longer has one: in May a gigantic branch of a centuries-old tree fell on its shop, destroying it. But he still decided to join the national demonstration. With what have become, in recent months, his sales methods: newspapers loaded into the trunk of his car. And the rear door is open: it’s his workstation.
“I won’t be able to decorate my ‘resale’, but I stand in solidarity with the entire movement and with my colleagues – explains Durzu to ANSA – A fight that concerns trade union issues, the modification of the premium in consideration of the fact that newspapers sell less. But I also join to defend the history of newsstands: during the Covid periods we were always open and were considered a fundamental point of reference for the dissemination of information and for people. Now many newsstands are closing. We cannot allow it” .
A personal struggle too. First the fall of the branch then, in the removal and rescue operations of what remained of the structure, the newsstand was further damaged: impossible to recover. Durzu, however, decided to continue anyway: in front of the same station. But by car. The Municipality assures that the newsagent will soon be able to have his resale again. The new location will be a few meters from the old one, but at a safe distance from that centuries-old, beautiful but potentially dangerous tree. “It is important to resist – clarifies Durzu – for this reason, albeit in different ways, I have decided to join this awareness campaign: cities cannot lose their newsstands”.
