The Thionville Fnaca Section: Honoring Veterans of the Algerian War and the Official End Date of Hostilities

How is the Thionville Fnaca section doing?

Marc Schneider, president : “I will start by mentioning the disappearance of six of our members who have unfortunately left us since our last general assembly. There are still 50 of us, all over 80 years old. So we are all “elders”. Veterans of the Algerian War… and proud of it. Even if this “unnamed war” was only officially recognized by our leaders on October 18, 1999.”

In a context where ranks are inevitably closing, how does the section manage to honor its annual meetings?

“We are doing our best to participate in patriotic commemorations, November 11, May 8, July 14 and others. The same goes for various inaugurations, celebrations within municipalities and departmental associations. We honor around thirty meetings per year, and at least one person from our committee attends. In fact, there are only four of us on the committee. We are still missing a few assessors. We need to strengthen our committee to survive under… normal operating conditions, I would say. »

Always keeping in mind the recognition of March 19, 1962 as the official date of the end of hostilities…

” Obviously ! In memory for those who were there, and more particularly for those who were still there, on March 19, 1962, in Ouarsenis, in Aurès, in Constantine, in Algiers, in Batna or more simply on a peak. For us, it was officially “the ceasefire”. For us, the little conscripts, it was the end of the fighting. The official end. You have to have been there to understand that and understand what we felt. »
