Cyclists Demand Greater Protection on NYC Streets After 26th Fatal Accident

Luis Pérez-Ramírez, 44 years old and of Hispanic origin, died on September 21 in Brooklyn. Along with him, 25 other cyclists have died in New York City during 2023, all from the same cause: a vehicle accident.

Given this figure, those who move by pedal demand greater protection to avoid these incidents on the streets. “Enough is enough, no more deaths of cyclists,” is the slogan to request new security measures.

Our reporter Alejandro Condis, from Univision 41, went to Union Square, in Manhattan, where dozens of cyclists protested for the authorities to provide them with protection on the roads.

“When there is an accident, the cyclist is seen as the culprit,” they denounce

“Every day I go out, I honestly don’t know if I’m going to return home. That’s why I think it’s not fair,” said Luis, a cyclist of Mexican origin, who goes out with cameras installed on his bicycle to report drivers who block the lanes that are for them.

Organizations such as “Transportation Alternative”, which fight against road violence, participated in the demonstration.

“When there is an accident with a cyclist, the cyclist is generally seen as the culprit. The laws must be strengthened and applied equally to everyone,” said another of the protesters.

According to official data from New York City, 1.6 million people use bicycles in the Big Apple, so protesters say the problem is much bigger than people think.

The number of 26 cyclists killed is the highest since it implemented its “Vision Zero” plan on the City’s roads in 2014. Since that year, more than 200 bicycle owners have lost their lives.
