Kelly’s Traumatic Birth Experience: Premature Babies and a High-Risk Delivery

Premature babies

There is a one minute wait and then Yasmin can continue. “They hoped that Joël had turned around by now, but that was not the case. They tried to turn it externally, but it didn’t work. I panicked. My mother and boyfriend thought I was in shock hit. I had lost two liters of blood and there were about fifteen people around me, five for me and five for each baby. Some moments I was silent and felt nothing anymore. I tried to focus on the midwife. She pulled me through. In the meantime, the gynecologist went in with his arm to get Joël. He was literally pulled out by his legs, it was like The incredible Dr. Pol fetched a calf.”

“Joël was intubated and Rowan had a mask over his nose for oxygen. Then I got to hold both my babies. And then I had to deliver the placentas. They didn’t come, so they removed them under anesthesia.”

Traumatic experience

Was it a traumatic experience? “Yes, I think so, although I look back on it now. You have an image in your mind of what your birth will be like and you know that complications can occur, but you don’t expect this.”

Both Yasmin and her (in-law) family are well cared for. “My mother and boyfriend were at the birth, but my brother and parents-in-law also came to the hospital. The nurse on duty went to them that same evening to tell them exactly what had happened. She also asked if she could support them and whether they needed to talk to a psychologist or social worker. We have been helped a lot.”

Family happiness

Rowan and Joël were born much too early and are therefore not allowed to go home immediately. “They spent four weeks in the hospital in Veldhoven and then another 5.5 weeks in the regional hospital in Den Bosch. I went to the hospital twice a day. It was a tough time.”

The couple is therefore overjoyed when the boys can go home. “I cried for two days when I heard that news. It was so wonderful to have them home. My boyfriend took four weeks off to get used to family life together. We cuddled with them a lot.” They are now six months old. “It’s going really well, so it’s all been worth it. They sleep through the night, babble and are cheerful. Although I have my hands full, haha.”
