Technology AMD Anti-Lag, which aims to reduce responsiveness and thus improve the user experience of the game, seems to be problematic for competitive titles. The developers of the newly released Counter-Strike 2 were the first to speak up, strongly warning the community not to enable the feature, as its use can lead to a permanent ban by Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) protection. We have informed you about this separately here. However, the problems with AMD Anti-Lag extend far beyond Valve’s new FPS.
Cases wrongly granted bans due to the use of seemingly innocuous technology that does not give players any unfair advantage, they are incredibly absurd. It is therefore not surprising that the whole situation began to be examined in more detail. A foreign server came up with a nice analysis Wccftechwho discovered that enabling AMD Anti-Lag can theoretically be a threat to a larger number of players of competitive online games.
Unlike DLSS-type technologies, AMD Anti-Lag is not integrated via a plugin into the game itself. This is a function provided by your graphics card drivers, namely by modifying the DLL libraries in the game directory. The advantage is that this process does not require AMD to work directly with game developers.
The fundamental defect, however, is that there is practically a similar interaction as when you start the cheats (aimbot, wallhack, etc.) to gain an illegal advantage over other players. This may ultimately provoke the game’s anti-cheat to give you a penalty. He himself is obviously not able to properly realize how you manipulate the files and what is the consequence of those modifications.
What’s worse, it’s not just a cooperation issue between AMD Anti-Lag and VAC. Wccftech refers to numerous complaints some Apex Legends battle royale shooter playerswho allegedly got banned after turning on Anti-Lag+.
In addition to bans being handed out to players, there is a risk of using Anti-Lag technology game crashes or occasional stability issues. Again, this is a consequence of modifying DLL files instead of working directly with developer studios. There are complications reported v Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
As for Counter-Strike 2, AMD has already commented on the situation and is currently working with Valve on a fix. However, we hope that he will also provide an opinion regarding Apex Legends and adjust the system so that it does not attract the attention of anti-cheats unnecessarily.
