The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe confirmed on Monday that parliamentary elections in Poland witnessed a record high voter turnout, with a wide range of political options and candidates able to campaign freely.

The organization’s report on the parliamentary elections – which took place yesterday in Poland – stated that the elections were held in a highly polarized atmosphere, and many considered them decisive for Poland’s democratic future.

The joint monitoring mission from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe found that the legal framework provides an adequate basis for holding democratic elections, the report said.

The report quoted international observers as saying, “The parliamentary elections that took place on Sunday, although they presented Polish voters with different political alternatives, took place in a complex and polarized political environment and witnessed inflammatory speeches and personal attacks against party leaders.”

The report noted that more than 29 million voters were registered in yesterday’s elections, including more than 600,000 who applied to vote abroad, and the high participation rate demonstrated citizens’ commitment to supporting democracy in Poland.
