“Detectives have determined that the suspect targeted the two victims of this brutal attack because they were Muslim, as well as because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving Hamas and Israel,” the statement said.
The victims are Palestinian-Americans, the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said.
Joseph Chuba, 71, of Plainfield, a Chicago suburb, has been charged with murder, attempted murder and hate crimes, police said in a statement.
The family of the murdered boy rented a residence from the accused, reports “BBC”.
The man attacked the boy and his mother with a military-style knife, which had a blade at least 18 centimeters long. The man first attacked the woman, she suffered several injuries, but managed to take refuge in the bathroom and called the police.
