The Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Israel’s Attacks and UN’s Warning

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening

Israel continued its attacks on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, where it targets the targets of the radical movement Hezbollah. Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that fuel supplies in hospitals in Gaza will last only 24 hours, and then medical facilities will be without electricity, putting the lives of thousands of patients at risk. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Middle East is on the brink of an abyss.

The server of The Times of Israel reported on the Israeli attacks, according to which Israel hit the “military infrastructure” of Hezbollah in Lebanon. In the Gaza Strip, Israel appears to be preparing for a ground invasion aimed at destroying the political and military leadership of Hamas, which was behind the massacre of Israelis on October 7. Since then, militants have fired more than 6,000 rockets at Israel from Gaza, according to the military.

According to international organizations, the situation for the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, who have nowhere to escape from the narrow coastal strip the size of Prague, is critical. The United Nations Office for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said the crisis is such that it is no longer able to provide humanitarian aid.

“Thousands of people were killed, including women and children. In Gaza, we’re even running out of body bags,” said UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini. According to Reuters, authorities in Gaza are considering digging mass graves.

The opening of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip could improve the situation at least a little, where humanitarian aid could begin to flow into the otherwise completely closed area. American television ABC News reported that the crossing should be open for several hours today. This is where foreigners should be able to leave Gaza.
