Egypt, Israel, and US Allegedly Agree on Ceasefire in Southern Gaza and Rafah Crossing Opening: Israel Denies Reports

Media reports that Egypt, Israel and the United States have agreed to a temporary ceasefire from 09:00 in the southern part of Gaza, where the Rafah crossing is located. Israel denied this information.

Source: Reuters citing two Egyptian security sources, The Times of Israel with reference to a statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Reuters verbatim: “Egypt, Israel and the United States have agreed to a ceasefire in southern Gaza from 0600 GMT (0900 Kyiv time), coinciding with the opening of the Rafah border crossing, two Egyptian security sources said on Monday.

The sources said the truce would last several hours, but did not specify its exact duration. They also said the three countries had agreed that Rafah would remain open until 1400 GMT on Monday as a one-day initial reopening.

Details: Salama Marouf, head of the Hamas government’s press office, said they had not received any confirmation from the Egyptian side about their intentions to open the checkpoint.

The US Embassy in Israel said the situation in Rafah would be “fluid and unpredictable, and it is unclear whether travelers will be allowed to transit through the checkpoint, and if so, for how long.”

The embassy stated that citizens who feel sufficiently safe can proceed to the checkpoint.

For reference: The Rafah crossing, which straddles the border between Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Hamas-controlled Gaza, is the only crossing point into territory not under Israeli control.

Updated: At the same time, Israel denies reports that it has agreed to a ceasefire in southern Gaza to allow the Rafah border crossing to open to allow aid to flow into the strip.

Verbatim Office of the Prime Minister: “At the moment there is no ceasefire for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and the departure of foreigners.”

Background:

The Egyptians control the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt, through which civilians from Gaza could potentially be evacuated. The media reported its closure due to Israeli strikes. At the same time, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry claims that the checkpoint is open and was not closed at “any stage of the beginning of the conflict” (war – ed.). The reason for the problems in his work on the Palestinian side is the Israeli bombing.
