When the engine fails on a vehicle with an automatic transmission, the towing process is limited, depending on the type of transmission and vehicle.

For most vehicles with automatic transmissions, it is possible to move the selector to neutral by simply pressing the brake pedal or follow other instructions provided by the manufacturer, such as pressing the release button next to the lever. Switching to neutral allows you to tow the car without problems.
However, modern cars with automatic transmissions and CVTs have limited towing capabilities. The regulations limit the ability to tow in neutral to a minimum, that is, it practically prohibits towing with an automatic transmission without the engine running. Current recommendations indicate that if the engine fails on a car with an automatic transmission, it is better to call a tow truck to safely transport the car.
On the other hand, robotic transmissions, especially simpler models, allow towing in neutral over long distances. However, when using complex modern selective gearboxes, it is recommended to limit towing to the nearest car service center, using a “15 by 15” approach, that is, limiting the speed and distance of towing.
Due to the complexity of modern automatic transmissions, it is best to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and, if necessary, contact a professional or towing service to safely move an automatic vehicle if the engine is not running.
