Iranian police have arrested two suspects in connection with the violent murder of Dariush Mehrjui this weekend. The famous Iranian director and his wife were stabbed to death in their home in a neighborhood just outside Tehran.
In addition, the police have two other suspects in mind, the British newspaper reports The Independent on the authority of the Iranian news agency ISNA.
The police cannot yet say anything about the motive of the two murders. Iran’s culture minister said in a statement that his country “has lost one of the great film pioneers.”
83-year-old Mehrjui, one of Iran’s best-known directors, and his wife were found dead in their home on Saturday evening. Mehrjui’s wife said in an interview in an Iranian newspaper this week that they had been threatened and that their house had previously been broken into.
Mehrjui made his name in 1969 with his film The Cowwhich is seen as one of the first titles of the ‘nouvelle vague’ of Iranian cinema. The Cow was awarded at the Venice festival, among others.
