Eating until you burst is the goal of the fearsome Dr. Panza, who always gets his way until the children Jairo and Julito decide to confront him. The musical show The terrible misadventures of Dr. Panzawritten by Ángel Luna and directed by Roam León, will celebrate six years in theaters, and more than 250 performances by Jengibre Teatro, with a performance at the City Theater “Esperanza Iris”, this Sunday, October 15.
The topic of obesity, which leads to diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, depression, and leads people to take refuge in food, is treated with quite dark humor. As Ángel Luna points out, the problem is not the food, but everything behind it: the social, the emotional and the psychological. Certain sectors of Mexican society often say, if the child is not fat, he is not healthy. A skinny child is synonymous with lack of health, the grandmothers warned.
About 10 years ago, Luna came up with the topic because since she was a teenager she had been living with the problem of her parents being overweight, diabetes and hypertension. The idea for the work took shape with the birth of her nephew. “I decided to write a character representative of this anxiety, fear and anguish, as an evil being who offers his particular solution to the problems.
“He Dr. Panza He carries his own problems because if he does not maintain a minimum quota of fat children and obese parents, as well as depressed and conflicted ones, the poison court, who are his bosses, will demote him. His achichincles, Chicharrón and Mueganito, help him hatch his plans in his gastronomic laboratory where super delicious dishes are prepared so that people become addicted to the food,” says the playwright. Everything turns ant-colored because people no longer gain as much weight as before.
This is a story told from the perspective of villains who are dedicated to doing evil. Children are the heroes who will save their parents and their schoolmates whose overweight makes them victims of bullying. The “message” is transmitted, then, through humor and original live music. The songs were proposed since the writing of the work. Dr. Panza’s theme is surf-style, while the overture is jazzy, and the children are identifiable by the musical comedy, Luna explains.
The orchestra’s equipment includes piano, drums, guitar and bass and trombone. All the artists involved in the work – in this case eight – are multidisciplinary. They are actors with experience in clowning and comedy. They are also musicians and sing.
The locker room Dr. Panza It refers to your imaginary world. His retro-futuristic steampunk-style clothing is a fantastic sign that allows him to disguise himself as parents and get into any hole to convince them to eat more, Luna points out.
The terrible misadventures of Dr. Panza, will be presented this Sunday the 15th, at 6:00 p.m., at the “Esperanza Iris” City Theater, Donceles 36, Historic Center. There will be a plaque unveiling with special guests.
