President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) left for China to coincide with the agenda of the Constitutional Court (MK) read out the decision regarding the lawsuit regarding the age limit for presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates (capres-cawapres) today, Monday (16/10).

Jokowi said there were two big agendas he would carry out in China. First, hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and the Speaker of the PRC Parliament.

“There are several priority issues that will be discussed at the meeting, including; increasing Indonesian exports, investment and developing food security,” he said Monday (16/10) as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube account.

Then on the second agenda, Jokowi will attend the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Summit.

After leaving China, Jokowi said he would visit Riyadh on Wednesday (18/10). He will meet the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman (Prince MbS).

“I will discuss increasing economic cooperation, investment, guaranteeing halal products, energy,” he said.

On the other hand, the Constitutional Court will hold a hearing to pronounce the decision on the judicial review of Article 169 letter q of the Election Law regarding the age limit for presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

The plan is for the agenda to pronounce the verdict to begin at 10.00 WIB in the MK plenary courtroom, Jakarta. Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Anwar Usman has arrived at the Constitutional Court ahead of the verdict.

A number of parties believe that the Constitutional Court will confirm dynastic politics if it grants the lawsuit regarding the age limit for presidential and vice-presidential candidates from 40 years to 35 years.

Lecturer from the Indonesian College of Law (STH) Jentera Bivitri Susanti assesses that the lawsuit really accommodates the interests of President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“If what happens is the second or third scenario, i.e. the request is granted, then in my opinion the Constitutional Court has problems in two ways. First, it confirms dynastic politics which is even worse than in the Soeharto era,” said Bivitri in a webinar entitled ‘Threats of Dynastic Politics Ahead of the Election 2024?’, Sunday (15/10).
