The health authorities of Peru have established an epidemiological fence after detecting a case of human rabies in a 54-year-old woman who weeks before was bitten by an unidentified dog in a district of the southern region of Arequipa, the Ministry of Health reported this Sunday. (Minsa).
The infected person resided in the Chiguata district and is being treated at the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital in Arequipa, more than 1,000 kilometers south of Lima.
The Minsa indicated that it has intervened in the area through the National Institute of Health (INS) and the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC).
In addition, the health personnel of the Regional Health Management (Geresa) of Arequipa established the epidemiological fence in the sector where the case was registered “to cut the chain of transmission” and the people who had contact with the woman have also received care. medical and are being vaccinated against rabies.
The Minister of Health, César Vásquez, ordered that a special team from the CDC and the Directorate of Prevention and Control of Metaxenic Diseases and Zoonoses of the Minsa travel in the next few hours to Arequipa to support the investigation of this case.
The CDC reported that the last case of urban human rabies in the country had been recorded in 2015 in a person who was infected in the southern region of Puno, bordering Bolivia.
The Minsa added that these cases of human rabies occurred since the reintroduction of canine rabies in the country in 2014, and for that reason “the field epidemiological investigation, clinical monitoring of the case and those exposed will continue.” ”.
The availability of supplies and medications for the patient will also be managed, the vaccination of her contacts will continue, and canine vaccination activities in the area will be intensified.
