The gold turned to sand.
But David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig have taken Sweden’s first ever medal in a senior WC in beach volleyball.
– It is important to say that we win a silver medal, says coach Anders Kristiansson after the final loss against the Czech Republic.
Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner from the Czech Republic became too tough a nut to crack for David Åhman and Jonathan Hellvig.
The Swedish duo, born in 2001, have taken the beach volleyball world by surprise and entered the World Cup final against the Czechs in Tlaxcala, Mexico, as favourites.
But Perusic and Schweiner won the first set fairly easily 21–15 before the Swedes forced a tiebreaker after 21–17 in the second.
Ranking points
But in the decider, the Czechs were outnumbered. Despite a bit of rubber arm at the end, they were able to win 15–13.
The silver means that for the first time Sweden takes a medal in a senior WC in volleyball or beach volleyball, in the couple’s first world championship.
Much now also says that the duo will make it to the Olympics in Paris. The winner of the WC final was guaranteed a place, but the silver means high ranking points for Åhman and Hellvig.
– We win each set and then we have a tiebreak where we lose 15-13, then the difference between the teams is quite small. I think this is very big. It’s a world sport, there are 40 countries that are here and fighting. We are little Sweden with our beach community. It is important to say that we win a silver medal. We also scored a lot of points here on the way to Paris, says coach Anders Kristiansson in Viaplay.
