Seven Cars with Five-Cylinder Engines: Mercedes, Audi, Acura, Volvo, Fiat, Volkswagen, and Land Rover

Only some fast Audis with an RS badge are still available with a five-cylinder, but in fact the five-cylinder has always been few and far between. On the other hand, you can recognize them from thousands with their characteristic rumble. We list seven better-known and lesser-known cars with five cylinders for you, mainly highlighting cars that started the five-cylinder era for the brand or concern in question. Because these are obviously not all five-cylinders that have ever existed!

Mercedes-Benz 300D (1976)

The naturally aspirated three-liter five-cylinder pre-chamber diesel engine, which peaks at 80 hp, gives the Mercedes-Benz W123 a top speed of 148 km/h. Four years later, only the station wagon gets a turbo variant that can reach 165 km/h. The predecessor ‘Strich 8’ also had a five-cylinder diesel, the 240D 3.0.

Audi 100 5E (1978)

For higher performance in the 100, Audi has given the 1.6 liter four-cylinder from the 80 an extra cylinder. Equipped with mechanical petrol injection, the 2.1 liter five-cylinder in the Audi 100 5E produces 136 hp. It was the beginning of the five-cylinder era at Audi that continues to this day.

Acura Vigor (1991)

The Honda Vigor (known in America as the Acura Vigor) fills the gap between the Accord and the Legend. It is optionally available with a 2.0 or a 2.5 liter five-cylinder inline engine.

Volvo 850 (1992)

To generate publicity, Volvo entered the British Touring Car Championship in 1994 with two 850s, to be precise with two station wagons. The five-cylinders do not win, but the attention is maximum.

Fiat Coupe (1996)

In 1996, the two-liter five-cylinder (a naturally aspirated and a turbo version) in the Fiat Coupé replaced the four-cylinders with the same swept volume. The five-cylinders are part of a modular engine family that also has diesel variants.

Volkswagen Golf V5 (1997)

While most five-cylinder engines usually have their cylinders neatly arranged, Volkswagen introduced a V-arrangement in 1997. It is an amputated variant of the VR6 that, given its small block angle of 15 degrees, you can hardly call a V-motor. The Golf, Bora and Passat, among others, received it.

Land Rover Discovery Td5 (1998)

In 1998, Land Rover replaced the four-cylinder Tdi for the Td5, which is not entirely surprising for a turbo diesel with five cylinders. The old Tdi no longer meets the new Euro standard. Volkswagen promptly claims the letter combination TDI.
