Leiden University Building in The Hague Reopens Following Safety Investigation

Oct 15, 2023 at 3:13 PM Update: an hour ago

The Leiden University building on Wijnhaven in The Hague will reopen on Monday. According to the university, the safety risk that caused the building to be closed since Friday no longer appears to exist following an investigation by the police.

It is not known what exactly the safety risk was. “We can imagine that the temporary closure of Wijnhaven raises questions among our employees and students,” the university said in a statement on Sunday. “Unfortunately, we cannot comment on the reason for the temporary closure. The college had to take this measure to guarantee the safety of our academic community.”

The campus in The Hague focuses, among other things, on international law, peace and security. The building is usually open all week. Due to the safety risk, the university’s executive board decided to keep the building closed during the weekend.

Two Jewish primary schools and a Jewish secondary school in Amsterdam have also been closed since Friday. The closure was due to fear of unrest due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. These schools will probably also reopen on Monday. A decision on this will follow later on Sunday.
