Let’s face it – each of us likes to face challenges from time to time. Sure, fun, hassle-free tasks are cool, but they never offer that much satisfaction once you get through them. A good grade from a diligently completed exam tastes better than one obtained for cheating. And if we win a match against a very demanding rival, we feel like we are flying – winning against weaker teams makes us happy, but the joy is short.
The same happens with gameswhen we are looking for challenges. When the plot or the enjoyment of the created world become secondary and we want to test ourselves, we play titles that require maximum concentration, rethinking every step and, of course, an intelligent approach, and at the same time literally angelic patience. However, as players, we have a weakness for this.

So it’s no surprise that the souls-like genre is so popular. This endorphin rush after defeating a boss we have been facing for a long time is worth the fatigue of repeating the patterns until it hurts. But it should be noted that not everyone likes this type of games. So if you are looking for challenges and at the same time productions including: from From Software are not for you, then take a look at the proposals we have prepared!
Ghostrunner
Let’s start with one of my favorite games (no genre division). I love Ghostrunner and I actually wrote about it in the review I had the pleasure of preparing for you on the occasion of the premiere of the title. This is a production that is demanding, but perfectly combined with a fair approach. Don’t feel like you’re being killed by developers’ decisions. Great fun – and a sequel is coming soon!
Cuphead
Another title that can easily be described as demanding, but far from being frustrating. Sure, you can get a little annoyed with some of the levels, but in the end you don’t have a problem playing through them over and over again. We are constantly learning the solutions and mechanics proposed by the creators, and this makes the fun of jumping on subsequent platforms at the highest level.
Super Meat Boy
I remember struggling with this game years ago. I was definitely too young to master it well, but hundreds of attempts made me somehow glide through the stages. I eventually managed to complete it, but if I had a record of the hours I spent dodging the blades, it might have terrified me. If you haven’t played it, I really encourage you to try it – especially since Super Meat Boy is currently available for cheap.
Hotline Miami 1 & 2
At the time of writing this title, we have not yet received official confirmation that the collection of both Hotline Miami installments is coming to large consoles (it is, of course, available on Nintendo Switch), but such reports have appeared. If they prove successful, many people will undoubtedly become familiar with this demanding game. And I am absolutely convinced that some will bounce back, and others will fall in love from the first shot. Give this production a chance!
Celeste
Would I describe Celeste as one of the most demanding platform games I’ve ever played? Well… Definitely yes! At first it starts innocently, but we quickly learn that some jumps have to be calculated down to the millimeter, and the game does not forgive even the smallest mistakes. However, as if this wasn’t enough of a challenge for you, a special mode will definitely blow your mind!
Open it
This game from a small studio called The Gamą Bakers is probably the least known of the entire list, but definitely worth your attention. Developers from France have prepared for us a great land straight from a fantasy novel, where we step into the shoes of a prisoner trying to escape from a very well-guarded prison. The production is incredibly dynamic and although it debuted seven years ago, it is still a great game.
Ninja Gaiden
It is actually worth mentioning the entire series here, after all, all versions are characterized by a high level of difficulty. Sure, there were better and worse ones, and the brand’s glory days are now behind it (although who knows what the future will bring), but… If you are not deterred by some minor archaisms, then dive into the world from the first part. And next year will be our 20th birthday, so maybe something special will appear…
Overcooked 1 & 2
I’m a huge fan of this series and in fact I’ve mentioned many times that my current wife and I have gone platinum in both installments (as well as the current generation collection). Nevertheless, it was a real ordeal and – half-jokingly – a test of our love. Some stages were maddening and made us go through the next few in silence. However, if you like cooking, challenges and great fun, don’t hesitate any longer!
FTL: Faster than Light
I thought that it would be worth including a game other than a dynamic action game on the pages of such a list. FTL is already a classic, but out of journalistic obligation I will mention that we are dealing here with a strategic production. Everything in the convention of science fiction, where we, as passengers of a lonely ship, try to escape from a space siege. I know it’s not the perfect title for everyone, but if you have Game Pass, there’s nothing stopping you!
Sifu
Finally, a title that is still very popular. Another production on the list that I had the pleasure of reviewing – this is where we started and this is where we will end. If you like kung-fu movies from the last decade, and you are looking for satisfying fights at a really high level of difficulty, then this title is definitely worth checking out. What’s more, it was implemented with the greatest care. I recommend!
