Do you collect DVDs and CDs? So we have bad news because one of the biggest department stores is going to stop selling.
In the past, it was the only way to watch a movie at home, alongside the old VHS. DVDs were the pinnacle of technology in the early 2000s, with film rental clubs on the rise, with several establishments of this type spread across Portugal.
In the United States of America, there was a store that represented this era, Blockbuster. The chain was founded in 1985 and, at its peak in 2004, had more than 9 thousand stores spread across the world. In 2010 the company went into bankruptcy, and four years later they closed the last 300 stores.
However, it was only in 2019 that the only and last Blockbuster of all closed. This last store gave rise to a series on Netflix, with the same name as the store. With the 2008 crisis and the evolution of streaming platforms, the company was unable to stay afloat, thus ending the large space of DVDs.
Although they are still for sale in other commercial areas, even with special editions, they are not the most sought after object by the public. The same goes with Blu-ray, despite the better quality, it is not the number one choice.
And it seems that it will be more difficult to buy a DVD and/or a Blu-ray, after one of the largest stores in the United States of America stops selling them from next year.
THE END OF AN ERA

One of the largest electronic equipment chains in the United States of America will stop selling DVDs and Blu-rays from 2024.
A Best Buy, which has more than a thousand stores, therefore stops selling these physical versions. Through a statement, the company states that “to state the obvious, the way we watch films and series is very different today than it was decades ago. Making this move gives us more space and opportunities to bring new customers and technology onboard for them to explore, discover and leverage.” Despite this change, physical games will not be affected.
In addition to the end of physical DVDs in these stores, Netflix also ended one of its oldest services in the United States of America, in which they sent films in physical format to the homes of their subscribers.
