Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority Showcases AI and Virtual Metaverse Technologies at GITEX Technology Exhibition 2023

Dubai – Gulf

The Roads and Transport Authority announced its participation in a package of projects and initiatives that employ artificial intelligence and virtual metaverse technologies, in the GITEX Technology Exhibition 2023, which begins tomorrow, Monday, at the Dubai World Trade Center.

In its pavilion, the Authority is displaying the smart portal that allows paying public transportation fares using a facial fingerprint, and the vehicle ownership transfer service via the “RTA Dubai Drive” application without the need to visit customer service centers, in addition to displaying a model of the first electric vehicle in the world made using printing technology. 3D, as well as the use of artificial intelligence and big data techniques to predict the occupancy rate of public parking. The updated version of the authority’s application will also be launched in its new look as part of the authority’s efforts to achieve leadership in providing government services and raising customer happiness, as the user interface has been redesigned according to the highest standards in The field of application design and customer experience, including improvements to the infrastructure and the use of data and artificial intelligence techniques in application development.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, stressed the Authority’s keenness to expand the use of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, in a way that contributes to enhancing productivity, raising the level of operational efficiency, and developing the services provided to customers, to facilitate the lives of residents and visitors in the Emirate of Dubai. Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (may God protect him), to improve the quality of life in the Emirate of Dubai, and provide multiple options for residents, so that Dubai becomes the best city for life in the world, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to enhance Dubai’s global competitiveness as a role model in the field of developing government work mechanisms, raising it to the best levels of efficiency, and achieving a full digital life.

Smart projects

Al Tayer said: The Authority has completed many projects and initiatives in the field of intelligent transportation systems, the most important of which are smart control centers for public transportation systems, self-driving transportation, and the capabilities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as the Internet of Things, applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, the use of robots, and advanced technologies. And electric energy solutions for mobility, stressing the authority’s keenness to keep pace with the future trends of the Dubai government, in transforming into smart, innovative and sustainable cities that use the latest communications technologies and modern digital means, as the authority is moving forward in implementing the Dubai strategy for smart self-driving transportation, to transform 25% From the total number of transportation trips in Dubai to smart self-driving trips by 2030, the authority, in cooperation with the American company General Motors Cruise, is preparing to operate self-driving cruise vehicles, to provide taxi services and electronic reservation services, and the number will gradually double to reach 4,000 vehicles by the year 2030.

Face fingerprinting techniques

In its pavilion, the Authority is displaying the smart portal that allows paying fares for using public transportation (Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, buses, taxis, marine transport) via facial fingerprint technology, without the need to use tickets, Nol cards, or credit cards.

The system’s mechanism of operation depends on registering and identifying the user, recognizing the face through the cameras, then analyzing the face in 3D, so that the image is converted into biological data to match it with the image, and then the amount is deducted from the account.

The initiative contributes to achieving integration between transportation services and other systems, facilitating the ease and speed of completing transactions, raising the level of operational efficiency of services, and reducing cash transactions.

Transfer ownership of a number

As part of the Authority’s efforts to keep pace with the latest technologies in the world, a service for transferring ownership of a vehicle number will be offered via the “RTA Dubai Drive” application, which enables customers to complete the necessary procedures to sell the number using the digital identity “UAE PASS”, without the need to visit any of the… Authority service centers.

The service provides a unique experience, allowing the customer to complete the transaction via the smart application, complete the sales procedures that begin by registering in the system using the digital ID “UAE PASS”, complete the service procedures and sign the sales contract in a safe and reliable manner using the electronic signature.

Three-dimensional lesson

The Authority displays in its pavilion a model of the first abra in the world, manufactured using 3D printing technology in cooperation with the private sector. The abra can accommodate 20 passengers, uses environmentally friendly electric motors, and its design and manufacture took into account the preservation of the traditional identity of the abra. This initiative contributes to supporting the government’s efforts. To achieve Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, reduce the manufacturing time of abras by 90%, reduce the manufacturing cost by 30%, and support the Authority’s strategy for environmental sustainability.

Predicting vacant positions

As for the initiative to employ artificial intelligence and big data to predict the parking occupancy rate, it includes analyzing transaction data and parking inspection data, as the artificial intelligence model analyzes and processes approximately 2.5 million parking reservation transactions and 600 thousand inspection transactions, by predicting the parking occupancy rate for every hour. For two full weeks in advance, and calculating the occupancy rate for every 15 minutes, this initiative enables customers to plan trips in advance by knowing the expected occupancy rates for parking lots through the Authority’s smart applications.

As part of its initiative, the Authority is also displaying the smart kiosk, the integrated platform for monitoring and managing the operations of flexible mobility service providers, an indicator for measuring the risk of drivers, monitoring passenger movement at stations, and a congestion index.
