Van Gundy, 61, was fired by ESPN in a cost-cutting move in June after 16 years as a popular analyst for the American network. Before, he coached for almost 20 seasons in the NBA, assistant to the New York Knicks between 1989 and 1996 and first coach of the New York team between 1996 and 2001 and then directed the Houston Rockets between 2003 and 2007 before changing the benches for the microphones. The coach was part of the Team USA coaching staff this summer at the World Cup.
Among his achievements, Jeff Van Gundy reached the Finals with those Knicks led by Patrick Ewing, both as an assistant in 1994, losing the title series against the Rockets, as a head coach, losing in the 1999 Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Van Gundy also coached in the 2000 All-Star game. As a player, he retired in college, beginning his coaching career at just 23 years old at McQuaid Jesuit High School.

The Celtics coach, Joe Mazzulladefined the hiring as “amazing” in statements collected by ESPN.
“Every time you have to add people with a lot of character, high level and professional. I think it is obvious and it is fortunate that I am here, not only for the coaching staff, but for everyone,” Mazzulla highlighted. As the second youngest coach in the NBA – 34 years old, just months apart from Will Hardy-, Mazzulla will be able to benefit from the experience of Van Gundy, who will split his time between the Celtics and the Maine, Boston’s G-League team.
