Created by Iwao Takamoto, the cartoon Scooby-Doo appeared in 1969 in the United States, on the CBS network. In France, it was broadcast under the title Scoubidou from March 5, 1975 to November 19, 1980, in the show Les Visiteurs du Dimanche on TF1. Since then, the series has gone through multiple versions and rebroadcasts.
What is the Mystery Machine?
In the cartoon, the characters travel aboard a lavishly decorated van, called Mystery Machine. The gang of teenagers obviously need a vehicle to travel across the country and go on a quest to investigate supernatural stories, and obviously catch the bad guys.
The van is immediately recognizable by its flashy colors and can be found in every episode. In the series, we learn that the van belonged to a music group, called “The Mystery Kids”.
The vehicle was therefore a tour truck. It is Fred Jones, the leader of the Mystery, Inc. gang, who buys the vehicle, and it is he who drives it most of the time in the different episodes.
What is the brand of the van?
While we guess that the van is an American van from the 1960s, there are no details confirming the make, model or year of the vehicle.
Some fans of the series think it’s a Dodge A100, while others say it’s a Chevrolet G-Body pickup truck, but there is no official consensus as to what type of pickup truck it is. what the Mystery Machine actually is.
Children, viewers of the series, will make up their own mind.
In the collective imagination
The series having had a very long lifespan, several generations of children know the Mystery Machine and its hippie van decoration.
Throughout the versions, adaptations or derivatives of the series, the spirit is preserved, always with the same color, green and blue and the Mystery Machine sticker. As the episodes progress, we learn more about this mysterious machine.
The van is equipped with lanterns, ropes and ladders. It is even equipped with a parachute! Very useful when a gang of thugs tries to control the van remotely with a remote control.
Today the Mystery Machine decoration is one of the most copied, along with that of the All Risks Agency’s Barracuda van.
