Ular, a student on Staten Island’s IS 7, was riding an MTA bus passing the corner of Littlefield Ave. and Hylan Blvd. in Eltingville around 2:30 p.m. Friday when he got into an argument with a 14-year-old boy. years, police said.
The two teenagers made gang signs at each other before the older one lunged at Ular with a knife, said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.
The attacker stabbed Ular in the chest and ran from the bus, NYPD said. He was detained moments later by a retired NYPD sergeant and a state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officer who were nearby. The injured boy was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital, but could not be saved.
The 14-year-old suspect was charged with involuntary manslaughter and weapons possession. for the death of Ular. His name was not revealed due to his age. The detainee was a classmate of Ular, according to New York Post.
“It is absolutely tragic,” Demetrius Crichlow, senior vice president of New York City Transit. “I spoke to the bus operator. He was visibly devastated, but he was able to remain calm, notified command and alerted the police quickly.”
Michael Tambasco, 44, who lives in the area, said the inside of the bus where the fight broke out was “covered in blood.” “The police did not wait for an ambulance. “The police put him (the injured man) in their unmarked black truck,” he added.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Young people are protagonists in armed violence in New York as victims and perpetrators, particularly shootings and attacks with knives. In September 2022 an NYPD report found that recidivism among adolescents had increased dramatically over the past five years and the number of gunmen and their underage victims had tripled.
A recent NYPD report warned that Fatal stabbings are up 29% this year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.
In a recent survey, the majority of New Yorkers identified crime (73%) among their biggest current concerns. According to another alarming survey released this summer 70% of NYC residents fear that they will be victims of a criminal act.
