There should not be neighborhoods in the 21st century with surface-flowing fecal water in the streets. Sewerage, garbage cans and a kindergarten – this is what people from the Fakulteta neighborhood in Sofia dream about. This was stated by the candidate for mayor of Sofia from MK “BSP for Bulgaria” Vanya Grigorova, who together with the candidate for regional mayor of “Krasna Polyana” Georgi Milanov met with people from the neighborhood “Faculteta” and got acquainted with the difficult conditions in which they live thousands of residents of our European capital. 45 thousand people live in the Faculty.
Cleanliness, hygiene and garbage disposal emerged as the biggest and urgently needed problem among many others in the Krasna Polyana area. This is the balance sheet after Vanya Grigorova’s tour. She spoke to local residents who asked for a friendlier and cleaner environment and improved infrastructure, replacement of trams on line #10, which they said were “like from World War II”, solving the problem of stray dogs and rodents in Lebeda Park.
In the meetings and the tour in the city “Krasna Polyana” also actively participates Georgi Milanov – the candidate for regional mayor of MK “BSP for Bulgaria”. He was born here, and his whole life is connected with the area. He knows people’s problems, and people know him and his desire to do something good and meaningful. The vision of his future work rests on deeply democratic principles.
“They need to stop talking about our neighborhood as a ghetto. I want the citizens to have access to their regional mayor and say what they want to be done – be it a kindergarten or repair of the sidewalks,” Milanov said.
Among his plans is to use funds for projects from the funds and with joint efforts “Krasna Polyana” will become a beautiful and welcoming area.
“The problem with the cleanliness in the Krasna Polyana area is directly related to the bleeding of the municipal company Chistota Iskar, which takes care of garbage collection in the area,” explained Vanya Grigorova. She explained that it is paradoxical that it is the Sofia Municipality that is degrading the quality of his work and leading him to liquidation by taking away his areas in order to give them to a concession.
And the area is referred to as a ghetto also because the “Faculty” is nearby – a place that has been languishing in ruin and dirt for years. The free-flowing sewage periodically overflows, flows down the streets, where people and cars pass and children play, to flow into an external sewer of “Sofia Voda”, overgrown with weeds and swamp vegetation. Georgi Milanov recalled that years ago, an epidemic of hepatitis started from the open canals.
“Many of the streets are narrow and inaccessible, a fire engine or an ambulance cannot pass through them,” people complain. There is not a single kindergarten in the entire neighborhood, which, against the background of high unemployment there, further prevents mothers from going to work.
As an urgent task, Vanya Grigorova outlined the opening of kindergartens, construction of sewerage and infrastructure work and garbage collection.
With the candidate for regional mayor, they emphasized that it is necessary to actively work to increase the literacy of the Roma population in the neighborhood in order to get out of the vicious circle in which most of its residents are placed. There is an opinion that the region was deliberately left to NGOs and the state abdicated from it.
“For me, there cannot be a different policy for different neighborhoods,” Grigorova was categorical.
“The management of the capital for 33 years has been disastrous – both for politics and for our relations. We can’t go on like this. That’s enough!”, she also stated.

After the tour, Vanya Grigorova held a meeting with dozens of citizens from k. “Krasna Polyana” in the hall of the Exemplary Folk Community Center “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”, who welcomed her eagerly and sent her off with applause. They had also prepared a surprise – the meeting ended with the song “My country, my Bulgaria” and a traditional Bulgarian dance.
