Mars as passion

Both volcanoes and Mars fascinate him, so he combined his interests – he explores volcanoes on Mars. Geophysicist Petr Brož belongs to the younger generation of scientists and likes to talk about his research. He popularizes geology on social networks and writes books. He has been cooperating very intensively with Meteor since 2014. Therefore, he became one of the five scientists photographed by radio photographer Khalil Baalbaki. The photo was taken in a radio studio, but for the first time we used artificial intelligence to give it a completely different background. Petr Brož found himself on his favorite Mars. Do you think he can escape the volcanic eruption?

Does the wolf pack have a leader?

When we talk about someone as a strong pack leader, we mean a pack of wolves. After all, adventure novels are full of wolf attacks led by strong males. The heroes then shoot the pack leader in self-defense and the other animals scatter because they don’t know how to do without the leader. But biologist Prof. Jaroslav Petr pointed out that this idea is common, but completely wrong. A wolf pack is, above all, a family. How does it work?

The first Czech instrument in space

The program called Interkosmos, created at the initiative of the USSR, was attended by ten socialist states at the time. For the public, the program begins on October 14, 1969, when a launch vehicle carrying the Interkosmos 1 satellite takes off from the Kapustin Jar Cosmodrome near Volgograd. Its five scientific instruments were tasked with studying short-wave radiation from the Sun and the upper atmosphere. Czechoslovakia supplied a soft X-ray photometer and an optical photometer. Furthermore, two Soviet devices and one East German one worked on board. We reminded you of this in the column It happened this day, which is prepared by Ing. Francis Houdek.

Why is oxygen harmful to food?

Simply put, it is too reactive. It chemically bonds with a variety of elements, which can lead to the breaking of important bonds. We all know one example – if we grate an apple, it turns brown in a few minutes. How to preserve food to resist oxygen? There are special bags that are added to the packaging. Their principle was explained by chemist dr. Jan Havlík from VŠCHT.

Octopuses are among the most intelligent invertebrates. Their tentacles are incredibly dexterous and their entire body is so flexible and flexible that it can squeeze through even a narrow gap. Octopuses are poisonous, they can camouflage themselves well and release an ink cloud when threatened. There are about 300 species of them living on our planet and they are doing well evolutionarily, they even remember the dinosaurs. Now scientists have discovered that the octopus can detect the taste of a solid substance without having to dissolve it in a liquid, as human mucous membranes do, for example. The principle was described by dr. Jan Pačes from the Institute of Molecular Genetics AV.

Video of Drone footage shows massive dust storm sweeping across central New South Wales

It was May 9, 1934. What Ava, Brian and their children experienced was the beginning of one of the worst dust storms to ever hit the American Great Plains. The storm raged for two days, and the dust it managed to raise into the atmosphere traveled a distance of several thousand kilometers. As a result, around five and a half thousand tons of dust fell in the vicinity of Chicago from the most fertile soil in the area of the plains. And in the next two days, the dust monster swept over Buffalo, Boston, Washington and New York.

These events are described in the book Geostorky, published by Knihy Dobrovský publishing house. The author is dr. Petr Brož from the Institute of Geophysics AV. Jan Meduna reads from it in Meteor. You can win the book in our competition. The question will be heard at the end of the program.
