FA Cancels Painting Israeli Flag at Wembley Stadium: Controversy and Criticism

London

English Football Federation (FA) canceled painting Wembley Stadium with the Israeli flag during the match against Australia. The Israeli Federation criticized the move.

Wembley Stadium will initially be lit up by the ‘Star of David’ flag in the duel England vs Australia. The FA discussed the plan together UEFA following Hamas military attacks on Israeli territory.

This FA plan raises pros and cons among the British public. There are those who support this step, but many also express their support for Hamas and Palestine by holding demonstrations in London.

In the end, the FA chose to abandon its intention to color the Israeli flag at Wembley Stadium in the match on Saturday (14/10/2023) early morning WIB. The FA only gave a moment of silence and a black captain’s armband to honor the victims who died in the Hamas and Israel conflict.

“After discussions with partners and external stakeholders, we will only allow flags, uniform replicas and other representations of nationality for competing countries inside Wembley Stadium, for the upcoming matches against Australia (13/10) and Italy (17/10), ” said the official statement released by the FA.

Israeli Football Federation (IFA) condemns the FA’s decision to cancel plans to paint Wembley Stadium with the Israeli flag. The chairman of the IFA, Moshe Zuares, accused the FA of being ‘afraid’ of starting a fire amidst the pros and cons of British society.

“There are times in history when the truth is singular, sharp and clear. Such is the case today. More than 1,200 children, babies, women, men and the elderly were massacred by a barbaric enemy, who committed crimes against humanity. One “The only sin of the victims is that they are Israeli citizens,” Zuares wrote in an official IFA statement.

“Those who are afraid to light up stadiums in memory of the murdered and for the sake of historical truth, for reasons that cannot be understood at all and perhaps it is better not to try, are in darker times than my country is currently in,” he added.

“If this happened to the FA of a country that has always known how to be a moral beacon for the free world, it would be even more disappointing. I tried to explain this to my colleagues at the English FA several times in the last few days, but they insisted not to understand it. Now they are the ones who need to explain,” he concluded.

Senior FA officials are reportedly concerned about the perception they are taking sides in the Middle East conflict. The FA’s move is in sharp contrast to the British Royal Family – the King and Prince and Princess of Wales who firmly condemn acts of terrorism in Israel.
