Hip-Hop and Show Performances in Stjernekamp: Odd René’s Impressive Versatility and Winner Potential

There are probably several of the participants who are extra excited tonight. Only Damien is at home in the hip-hop genre, and especially Odd René, the man who always does well, will probably get to try his hand tonight.

Among the participants in general, there are no big surprises in the song selection, so I don’t imagine any huge banana peels in the hip-hop part of the broadcast.

The same applies to shows, a genre most people tend to have few problems interpreting credibly.

But! I still have faith in Odd René, not just tonight, but as the winner of the entire competition. He is by far the best vocalist, and has shown impressive versatility.

Now, unfortunately, I think Mari Bella has gone as far as she can in this competition, and I’m holding a button that she has to leave the competition tonight.

The excitement is rising, so stay tuned when the Stjernekamp gang will try their hand at both hip-hop and shows!

Tonight’s performances in order:

Hiphop:

Mari Bella: «Hope»

Mari has once again gone for one of the most difficult song choices in the entire competition.

Then it becomes all the more impressive when she treats the song in this way. She has been given a clear message to believe in what she has to convey, and she does it brilliantly.

To use a well-worn phrase: Mari Bella owns the stage tonight.

It is also quite wild to never slip out in this very demanding text. Here, there is simply complete control from end to end – it is believable, it is rock solid and really, really good. Hurray!

Odd René Andersen: “Ugly on the back”

By OnklP & The Distant Relatives (2014)

Now it gets exciting here. For the first time in the competition, Odd René is properly on the genre-wise smooth ice.

But the song choice is safe enough in any case, it’s not the most challenging song Norwegian hip-hop has to offer – but the message means a lot to many, and it should be treated with a certain respect. Odd René manages this very well, he is a master of communication.

As you know, the voice is very powerful, which suits the almost militant content of this song perfectly.

But! It is, of course, difficult to ignore the fact that he is definitely not a rapper, the facts and not least the costume feel reasonably tacked on.

Still no failure, so Oddemann lands on his feet once more.

Tone Damli: «Paper Planes»

Can Tone shed the harmless and soft stage persona and make the newly acquired and unfamiliar hoodie shine?

The answer is probably no.

Here it is fairly obvious that she is completely out of her depth. Far inside the shutter, even. The scene doesn’t exactly pop as Tone sits almost motionless all the way through, and the vocals probably bear the stamp of a little dash of nervousness as well.

This is by no means fatal, but it could have been incredibly much worse.

Tone is probably not the rough lunatic MI A is, but she has given it an honest try!

Aleksander With: «Who is she»

It seems that the new Stjernekamp folk disease “owning the song” has spread to Aleksander too, granted! Also, With! Yes, yes. Now one of the autumn’s big surprises has chosen “Hvem er hun” by Arif, a slow and confident song that suits Aleksander.

He is always very nervous about each and every genre, but so far it has proven to be completely unnecessary. This also applies to hip-hop-Aleks!

This is simply rock solid. The choice of dialect works well, and the only thing that might lag a little is the very intense relationship with the camera. Almost scary, say. But what does it do when Aleksander is burning with a real slip tackle on a genre that is so far from his own chest?

Damien: «Intergalactic»

Tonight’s last rapper is actually a rapper!

Damien opened the entire competition with his own genre, and now he returns with the Beastie Boys classic “Intergalactic”. As you know, the group is called Beastie BoyS and not Beastie Boy, so there is a bit of tension here with the three-headed troll on stage.

Damien has a voice that increases in strength the higher the note, and that helps a lot when you first get to grips with the Beastie Boys. This is a bit like mentioning Odd René in soul rock, quite simply.

Damien naturally has what it takes to succeed here, and he does.

Completely natural flow all the way, and problem-free even through the most challenging sections. It is also very impressive to be able to hold your breath in such a hectic song as “Intergalactic”, so there is probably not much to complain about here!

Almost perfect, Damien.

Vise:

1: Mari Bella: “It will pass”

Mari Bella has once again acted bravely: She has chosen a terrible song by the vilified poet Trygve Skaug. The quality of the song notwithstanding, Mari Bella is a good vocalist.

As Kari Bremnes points out: It is not necessarily an advantage when you are going to foreign countries, and that is also the trap Mari quickly falls into with this interpretation.

She does not master the downscaling of her voice, although there is a sour note now and then. Here, too, the key has probably been chosen to help the high notes in the chorus, but Mari should probably have been wiser to the damage of the deep notes.

Also, the song is cruel as well, then. In the end, this becomes too clever and too polished, even though the vocals are of course mostly of high quality.

2: Odd René Andersen: “Our best day”

By Erik Bye (1998, published 2003)

Now we’re talking!

Erik Bye, the very king of Norwegian wise and shanty. After all, Erik Bye had a beautiful voice, and you can’t exactly say that about Odd René. But in the opening, the harmony between Bye and Andersen is at least palpable, but here too there are some skill problems.

Odd René is at least as good a vocalist as Mari Bella, and it forces itself to the fore now and again in this interpretation. But when he dares to let himself down a little, this is absolutely magical.

The excellent text comes across well in the minor-voiced Odd René, and it shows yet another side of the Eastfolding’s enormous register.

Gorgeous!
