For information, the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical so that there will be times when the Moon will be at its closest distance from Earth (perigee) and farthest (apogee).

During the ring of fire solar eclipse phenomenon, the Moon was at apogee, causing the lunar disk to be unable to cover the Sun’s disk. This causes the Sun to look like a ring when it reaches the maximum phase of the eclipse.
